The Interviews

Denise Gossett - Founder & Director of Shiekfest

Picture

A Message from the Festival Founder Denise Gossett Back in early 2001 I starred in the horror film "Chain Of Souls" and was searching for ways to get the word out when I discovered there really weren't any film festivals focusing on horror. I came up with the idea to start a horror film festival and I told my sister-in-law Kimberlee my "silly" idea. She loved it! And even though we had no idea what we were doing, we immediately got to work ...I always say naivete will take you far and we are proof. We thought doing this festival would be fun and perhaps we'd be able to make some money to put towards making our own films. Little did we know how popular this "little" festival would become! After a few years Kimberlee ended up moving back to her home town in Michigan to raise her son. Her brother, my husband, Todd Beeson stepped in and we have been co-directors ever since.

Now in our 11th year, it's amazing to look back on the early years and see how far we've come. Submissions have gone through the roof and entries now come from every country! It blows our minds that this "silly" little idea that I had 10 years ago has become the festival with such a loyal following! We've learned a lot through the years and have met such amazing people. I just want to say how truly grateful I am for all of the supportive filmmakers, screenwriters, and fans. Thank you for keeping us around.

Travis Betz - Writer / Director

Winner for best Supernatural Feature Film - "The Dead Inside"

This is the second win at Shriekfest for the Drexel Box crew, picking up the Audience Choice Award two years ago with the demon love story, LO.

Where he got the idea -  One strange night whilst sleeping soundly in bed next to my lover/cinematographer, Shannon Hourigan, I was aroused from my slumber by the most wicked of noises. It was moaning. Not sexy moaning (that would have been awesome), but rather the creepy kind where angels shudder in fear. I rolled over to find Shannon the source of this terrible sound. Shannon breath in…demon breath out. I had never heard anything quite like it and it was chilling. I’m not a man who actually believes in possession, but at that moment I found myself wanting to give it consideration. Shannon did this for a week straight. It got to the point that I had to sleep on the couch because it was not only keeping me up but it was freaking my shit out. I’m sure many of you are thinking it was simple snoring and I need to man up. WELL, YOU WEREN’T THERE! This was certainly not snoring, as it was on the exhale.

Travis on "The dead Inside" - We put together a skeleton crew and grabbed hold of some awesome talent and started shooting something that I consider to be very unique as well as funny, sad and twisted. I’m not going to sit here and lie to you…this movie rocks. I’m bursting at the seams for you to see it, and if my seams burst then everyone will see that I’m the Devil. This is because I am currently wearing the skin of a man I tricked ages ago. His name was Travis. He’s the perfect cover.

In 2008 he started a new film production company, “Big Screen Ventures”, with RAGE, a horror-suspense tale as its first production. The film centers on a thirty-something suburbanite, Dennis Twist, who
unintentionally provokes the wrath of a mysterious, homicidal motorcyclist.

Next up for Witherspoon and Big Screen Ventures is “Head of the Tale”, a horror anthology in the vain of HBO’s old “Tales from the Crypt”.

Phillip with Producer Kylie & Rogee
A relatively new comer to the Industry Phillip Middleton has some great aspirations and strong ideas to bring to us all. Phil is a Native of Australia where he still lives today.  “The Ghost” His latest short film is an interesting take on the life after life. The tag line – I’m not dead, I’m not dead, and I’m not dead. “The Ghost” stars Rachel Coopes, Max Cullen, Bel Deliá who is also in the new Aussie horror flick The Tunnel which is premiering in the states at Scream Fest. , and Valentino del Toro

We had the chance to sit down with Phillip the writer/director of the short and his producer Kylie on the closing night of the 2011 Shriek fest. We talked about the short film and even Kylies near obsession of anything Joss Whedon Creator of Buffy the vampire slayer, Firefly, and the director of nest summers Avengers. I must admit that Rogee is smitten with the Aussie Producer and both of us were impressed with the level of talent that Phillip brings to the table as a new film maker. His first project is titled The Mouse That Ate My Brain (2006) which stared Max Cullen. I cannot wait to see part three of his series. - KB
